We're on a rock binge! Hehe. Continuing our polished stone jewelry theme for the week, the good folks of stuff from my backpack have these necklaces from semi-precious stones (remember to read Disclaimer #1 on the sidebar) for your visual and retail pleasure. These necklaces are part of the loot Edna brought home during her trip to Bangkok last year. Here's what she has to say about these pretties:

What can I say? I have a weakness for semi-precious stones. These necklaces look great worn together simultaneously, especially I think, when you're wearing a shirt in a solid colour. I'm thinking blue jeans, white shirt, a multitude of these rocks and you're good to go. Having a circumferance of about 82cm, when worn these necklaces stop at about 2-3 inches from your belly button. Go wild, grab a handful and have fun with these gems.

polished stone bracelets

To continue our polished rock jewellery theme, we bring you these bracelets in dark green, ochre-yellow and dark blue. Notice that the green and yellow bracelets matches the earrings we posted earlier? You betcha they do! And ‘coz they do, we’re giving a 5% discount if you buy both the earrings and the bracelet together. Edna, who sourced these goodies, has this to say about the bracelets:

The aunty who made these bracelets is a nice old lady and we had a lovely chat about how certain rocks were thought to improve your health and disposition. I can't remember all the advice she gave me but I enjoyed our visit, especially the part where she helped me look for rocks to match my outfit that day. Aunty tells me that the blue bracelet is made of lapis lazuli (this geologist agrees!), and the two others out of green and yellow jade respectively*. The jade bracelets are reassuringly heavy and looked pretty stacked together on my wrist when I tried them on. The yellow one has a carved centre piece that's about an inch long. My favourite of the three is the green jade. I can't help but admire the many hues of green it has, from darkest green to almost white.

Q: what goes with metal brooches? A: metal pins!

Continuing our 'something shiny, something sharp' theme :) , Nora pulls this out of her backpack: metal pins! Looking like pretty instruments of torture, Nora got these from the same souk as the brooches in this post. In fact, if you look closely at NY3 and NY4, the finishing and design is similar to brooch NY2 and NY1 respectively. Curlicues and whorls FTW!

For the sake of full disclosure, we at stuff from my backpack admit that we both have one of these pins. Nora usually wears hers on the shoulder as a scarf fastener while Edna uses it as a sort of button for those blouses that have buttons too far apart and gape unflatteringly. The fact that Edna's dog regularly chews buttons off her clothes mean that these nifty pins are in constant use!

If you take off the safety covering at the pointy end, we discovered that these babies also make quirky if deadly bookmarks (SFMB does not encourage this!). Let's not go that route however and stick (haha) with using the pins just as accessories.

metal brooches

Nora's first batch of goodies for stuff from my backpack are two brooches made from silver and copper. Square and measuring only at 2cm by 2cm, these are not the dramatic brooches that Mrs. Obama tends to favour. That said, they have exquisite detailing with tiny flourishes and curlicues. We imagine this will look lovely as a scarf fastener or as a substitute button for those days when you just need some bling. Nora has this to say about these metallic lovelies:

I was in Abu Dhabi last year for a friend's wedding. It was great to be back as I have fond memories of living in this city from several years ago. One of my favourite places to shop was at the souk and that's where I was when I spotted these brooches. They have sinced travelled nestled in my backpack from the exotic souk in Abu Dhabi to Jordan and then Malaysia with other treasures. Enjoy!

polished stone earrings

We love polished rock earrings! Elegant and with just the right weight to them, they swing effortlessly from your ears, catching the light. Edna got these from Bangkok and has these to say about them:

I was walking around the basement of a mall in Bangkok when I saw a Middle Eastern gentleman concentrating on something tiny in his hands. He was making earrings! His worktable was strewn with polished rocks of every colour and size, delighting the geologist in me. He was from Afghanistan and named all the rocks on his table, the names rolling off his tongue like so much music. Me, I scraped by Mineralogy class in Uni and anything other than pyrite and quartz is beyond me. I believe the nice Afghan gentleman said these two earrings were different types of Jasper, but for simplicity's sake, let's just call them pretty green earrings with red specks and pretty yellow earrings with faint lines.
